Raman Research Institute (RRI), founded by Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman in 1948, is a premier autonomous institute engaged in cutting-edge research in frontier areas of Physics. The PhD programme offers an opportunity to work under contemporary research themes with world-class faculty and facilities.
PhD Programme Structure
- Coursework: Intensive coursework during the first year, conducted in English.
- Degree Affiliation: Successful candidates will be registered for a PhD degree with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
- Scholarship:
- ₹37,000 per month for the first two years.
- ₹42,000 per month for the next three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
- Book Grant: ₹50,000 over five years.
- Accommodation: Hostel facilities (if available) or House Rent Allowance (HRA) at applicable rates.
- Duration: Scholarship support for up to five years.
- Additional Opportunities: Participation in national and international conferences is encouraged and supported.
- Special Collaboration: RRI participates in the Joint Astronomy Programme (JAP) with the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

1-year/2-semester Master’s in Physics/Mathematics/Astronomy/Optics/Photonics/Biophysics after a 4-year Bachelor’s | 55% aggregate or equivalent grade |
2-year/4-semester Master’s in above fields after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree | 55% aggregate or equivalent grade |
4-year Bachelor’s in Science or Engineering | 75% aggregate or equivalent grade |
M.Phil in Physics/Mathematics | 55% aggregate or equivalent grade |
Relaxation: 5% marks or equivalent grade relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates as per institute norms.
Final Year Students: Those expecting to complete their final degree in 2024-2025 may also apply, provided they can submit final scores at the time of admission.
Selection Procedure
Candidates are shortlisted for interviews based on valid scores in any of the following national-level tests:
- JEST (Physics)
- CSIR-UGC NET (Physics)
- GATE (Physics)
- GRE (Physics)
Final Selection: Based on performance in interviews at RRI, tentatively scheduled for May – June 2025. Call letters for interviews will be sent by April 2025 via email.
