Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar
Guru Nanak Dev University invites applications for its Ph.D. Programme for January 2025. Eligible candidates can apply online for admission. Details of the Ph.D. Eligibility Test and exemptions are outlined below.
Eligibility
- Academic Qualification:
- Master’s degree with at least 55% marks (or equivalent CGPA) for General candidates.
- 50% marks (or equivalent CGPA) for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled candidates.
- Degrees obtained via Distance Education, ODL Mode, or Lateral Entry Scheme must be verified for equivalency before applying.
- Ph.D. Eligibility Test Exemptions:
The following candidates are exempted but still need to apply online for admission:- UGC-NET (including Category-3)/UGC-CSIR (JRF)/SLET/GATE/GPAT/ICAR/INSPIRE qualified candidates.
- Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship awardees, Teacher Fellowship holders, Direct Fellowship awardees.
- M.Phil. graduates from GNDU.
- Candidates with a validity certificate for qualifying GNDU Ph.D. Eligibility Test.
- Note for Exemptions:
- M.Phil. candidates from other universities are not exempted from the Ph.D. Eligibility Test.
- Candidates awarded fellowships directly by UGC/CSIR/INSPIRE/Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship or other funding agencies can enroll anytime during the session.
Ph.D. Eligibility Test Details
- Date & Time:
- 14 February 2025 | 10:30 AM – 01:00 PM
- Test Venue:
- Lecture Theatre Complex, Near Chemistry Block, GNDU Campus.
- Test Pattern:
- Part I: General Awareness and Mental Ability (25 MCQs, 25 marks).
- Part II: Subject-specific questions (50 MCQs, 50 marks) and 5 short-answer questions (25 marks).
- Minimum Qualifying Marks:
- General: 55%
- SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled: 50%
- Validity of Eligibility Test:
- Valid for 2 years for candidates fulfilling all eligibility criteria.

Application Process
- Submission:
- Applications are accepted online only at www.gndu.ac.in.
- General Instructions:
- Candidates must verify equivalency of their previous qualifications (if applicable) through the Equivalence Book or the Equivalence Section of GNDU.
- Failure to verify qualifications will hold the candidate and department responsible for any discrepancies.
Important Notes
- The syllabus for the Ph.D. Eligibility Test will be as per UGC-NET standards or GNDU’s postgraduate syllabus for subjects without a UGC-NET.
- Admission to the Ph.D. program is not guaranteed by merely qualifying in the eligibility test.
- No exemptions from coursework are allowed.
