Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI)

The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) invites applications for admission to its undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programmes for the academic year 2025–26.

Important Dates

  • Applications Open (Online): Monday, 3 March 2025
  • Last Date for Online Applications (including online payment): Tuesday, 15 April 2025, 23:59 IST
  • Admit Cards Available Online: Saturday, 17 May 2025
  • Date of Entrance Examination: Saturday, 24 May 2025, 09:00-12:00/12:30 IST
  • Announcement of Results: Approximately one month from the date of the entrance exam
  • Commencement of Academic Session: First week of August 2025

Chennai Mathematical Institute Courses

CMI offers the following programmes:

Undergraduate Programmes (3-year B.Sc.)

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Computer Science
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Physics Note: There is a common entrance examination for both B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes. Students may choose their specialization after admission.

Postgraduate Programmes (2-year M.Sc.)

  • M.Sc. in Mathematics
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science
  • M.Sc. in Data Science

Doctoral Programmes (Ph.D.)

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science
  • Ph.D. in Physics

Eligibility

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Computer Science / Mathematics and Physics: Completion of 12th standard or equivalent.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics: Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, etc.) with a strong background in mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science: Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, etc.) with a strong background in computer science.
  • M.Sc. in Data Science: Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, etc.) with a background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Math)/M.Sc.(Math) or equivalent.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science: B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A. or equivalent.
  • Ph.D. in Physics: M.Sc. (Physics) or equivalent. Candidates can qualify via JEST, UGC-CSIR NET, or GATE.

Selection Process for Chennai Mathematical Institute Courses

For all programmes except Ph.D. in Physics, selection is based on an entrance examination conducted at designated centers across India.

Ph.D. Selection Criteria

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics: Candidates can qualify via CMI’s entrance exam or NBHM PhD Fellowship.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science: Candidates can qualify via CMI’s entrance exam, JEST (Theoretical Computer Science), or GATE (Computer Science and Information Technology).
  • Ph.D. in Physics: Candidates must qualify through JEST, UGC-CSIR NET (JRF with rank ≤ 200), or GATE (rank ≤ 100).

Shortlisted candidates for Ph.D. programmes will be called for an interview.

Direct Admission to B.Sc. Programmes via Olympiads

Students excelling in the following Olympiads are exempt from the entrance exam:

  • Mathematics: International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) or European Girls Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (EGMOTC)
  • Physics: Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC)
  • Informatics: International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC) or Gold/Silver Medalists at INOI

More details regarding Olympiad-based admissions will be announced when applications open.

How to Apply

  • Applications can be submitted online at www.cmi.ac.in/admissions.
  • The application form and entrance exam details will be available from 3 March 2025.

Fees and Scholarships

  • Tuition Fee: INR 1,25,000 per semester (for B.Sc. and M.Sc. Mathematics & Computer Science programmes); INR 2,50,000 per semester (for M.Sc. Data Science programme).
  • Scholarships: Merit-based scholarships, tuition waivers, and fellowships are available for eligible students.
  • Ph.D. Fellowship: Ph.D. students receive a monthly stipend (INR 37,000 for the first two years, INR 42,000 thereafter) along with an annual book grant.
