Introduction
The Oriental Research Institute and Manuscripts Library is one of India’s largest and most historic manuscript libraries, established in 1908. Originating from the Palace Library of the Travancore Royal Dynasty, it has grown into a premier center for manuscript studies. In 1940, the institution became part of the University of Travancore and is now a distinguished Indological Research Centre of the University of Kerala.
The institute plays a pivotal role in the preservation, study, and dissemination of India’s rich manuscript heritage.
Kerala University Diploma in Palaeography 2025 Programme Overview
The Post Graduate Diploma in Palaeography and Conservation of Manuscripts (PGDPCM) is a one-year, two-semester course designed to:
- Impart basic awareness and skills in Palaeography and Manuscriptology.
- Train individuals in studying, cataloging, editing, and conserving manuscripts.
- Equip students with expertise in reading old scripts, textual criticism, and using modern manuscript preservation techniques.
This specialized program supports Kerala’s extensive manuscript collections by preparing researchers to unlock their cultural and intellectual wealth for society’s benefit.
Eligibility
- Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks.
- Relaxation: Applicable for SC/ST candidates as per university norms.
Program Structure & Duration
- Course Type: Regular
- Duration: One year (two semesters)
- Components: Lectures, practical work, independent projects, and evaluations via continuous assessments, end-semester exams, text editing projects, and viva-voce.
Fee Structure
- Application Fee & Entrance Exam: ₹1,000
- Tuition Fee: ₹5,000
- Caution Deposit: ₹1,000
- DDF: ₹2,500
- Examination Fee (₹500 per paper): ₹3,500
- Fee for subsequent appearances per paper: ₹500
